Charity fundraising is not about you
I know that this is really deceptive, because after all, you need funding for your nonprofit. Without funding, your nonprofit will cease to exist. It needs money to breathe and expand.
Stay with me. Do you remember the age-old saying that you must first seek to understand in order to be understood?
In order to get funding online, you must first understand what your donors want from you. Specifically, I’m referring to the emotions that they want to feel before and after they donate.
It’s your job as a nonprofit to allow your donors to feel:
- Generous and that they are good people
- That they are making an impact
- Similar to the demographic they’re helping
If you don’t allow your donors to feel these emotions (and others), then you are robbing them of the please of giving.
For example, if you forget to thank your donors for giving money, then you are not allowing them to feel generous. The same goes for when you fail to share updates on your progress. You aren’t letting them feel like they’re making a real impact.
You must use the right distribution channels
It’s a whole new world. You can’t just rely on traditional mailers to get a donor to take action. That’s an old-school tactic.
Instead, you have to become educated about the new ways that donors find out about and connect with causes. I’m referring to social media, email lists, online groups, bloggers, and more.
As new apps and websites have emerged that affect how we all consume content, so too have the channels that you must go through in order to reach potential donors.
I know that it’s hard. Nonprofits are historically very slow to adopt new technology. However, it can make a massive difference in the amount of money you raise from the crowd. You can’t afford not to study up on these different channels.
I talk much more about this in my book, Nonprofit Crowdfunding Explained, where I reveal a step-by-step strategy for building your crowd, getting people to take action, and getting your campaign funded.
Big things aren’t accomplished by one person
It’s extremely rare when ONE person is responsible for a massive project or big accomplishment. Usually, great things are done by a team of people.
The best thing that you can do leading up to a charity fundraiser is to build a crowdfunding street team which will help you prepare for the launch, spread the word amongst their network, and also provide some social proof when you go live.
You are only good at so many things. To really have a stellar launch, you have to draw on multiple skills and resources in order to do something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Make sense?
Start by assembling together your core donors or those that are the most passionate about your cause. These are the people who are as excited as you are about helping people. They are committed to your mission and want to help out.
Start on the right foot with the right training
You are only as good as your training. This can come in the form of books you’ve read, YouTube videos you’ve watched, or webinars that you’e attended. It can also extend to coaches that you hire.
One of the services that I offer is coaching new nonprofits through this crazy crowdfunding terrain and making sure that you set a good foundation for the launch of a new fundraiser. This way, you won’t have to pay attention to EVERYTHING that’s out there. We’ll narrow in and focus on the key strategies that are going to make the biggest difference for YOUR nonprofit.
