In order to understand the crowdfunding landscape, we have to examine some of the ways that Kickstarter is unique and other alternatives that have sprouted up over the years.

Many of these sites serve their own demographic or niche that Kickstarter is not filling.

All or Nothing Fundraising

All or nothing fundraising is one of the main differentiators between Kickstarter and its competitor Indiegogo.

This type of fundraising simply refers to the fact that when you run a Kickstarter campaign, you must meet or exceed your fundraising goal on the website. If you fail to, then you won’t be able to keep the money that’s been raised.

No one’s credit cards will be charged. You won’t be able to transfer the funding into your bank account.

The reason why this rule was instituted was that each project creator on Kickstarter promises rewards to their backers. If they can’t deliver on their rewards, then they won’t be able to move forward with the project.

The fundraising goal is the minimum amount of funding needed to go out there and create the rewards and perks for the project. It’s funding the initial production run of the project.

Types of Fundraisers and Projects

There are so many reasons to raise money online. You might be an entrepreneur, creative type, charity, nonprofit, or even a real estate developer.

The types of projects that Kickstarter allows on its platform is really what distinguishes it as a website (and how you can compare it to others out there).

It’s important to keep in mind that every project on Kickstarter must fit into a specific category. Otherwise, you can’t launch it on the platform.

In addition, each platform has specific rules and regulations regarding the types of fundraisers that are allowed. There are designated rules on Kickstarter that you must abide be.

For example, you can’t raise money and then simply use that money to fund a cause. You can’t raise money and then donate it to a nonprofit organization. You gotta use it to create some kind of end product.

Launch and Fundraising Strategy

There is a step-by-step strategy that you must follow if you want to successfully raise money on Kickstarter. The same goes for Indiegogo, GoFundMe, and other crowdfunding websites.

Of course, there is some overlap with these strategies, but many categories and products differ!

I have a great Udemy course out there called the Kickstarter Launch Formula which dives deep into this launch process.

I also got an Audible book that you can listen to in the car or while on the subway which walks you through the Kickstarter Launch Formula I’ve uncovered.

Whether it’s the prelaunch, outreach, or how can go about getting real backers for your project, different categories are different.

A film crowdfunding campaign is going to have an entirely different fundraising strategy than a technology gadget. Does that make sense?

Which Alternative is Best?

In this YouTube video, I covered some of the Kickstarter alternatives that are out there, as well as explored which would be best for your specific project.

The video explores the types of projects you’ll find on these individual websites and platforms. But, you might still have some questions.

If you do, and you’d like me to take a good look at your project, you can book me for a one-on-one coaching session where I’ll review your project and plot out a strategy given your resources and assets.

Does that sound good to you?

You can book a call with me here. I can also tell you a bit about some of the services I recommend and ways I can help you with your launch. Hope you enjoy!
