In the past, we’ve written about the rise of gaming on Kickstarter and some of the awesome projects that have raised from $1-$3 million from loyal fans and excited gamers. However, we have never seen anything quite like inXile Entertainment’s Kickstarter project, Torment: Tides of Numenera which has raised $2.3 million in the first three days (27 to go).
inXile Entertainment was founded in 2002 by Brian Fargo, a prolific game producer and financer who has helped bring some of the best RPGs to market including Bard’s Tale, Fallout 1 and 2, Dragon Wars, and Baldur’s Gate.
Torment: Tides of Numenera is single-player, isometric story-driven role-playing game that takes after Planescape: Torment. It is not a sequel, but includes much of the thematic elements of P:T like a rich personal narrative, a beautiful and engaging game environment, and reactivity (your game choices have direct consequences and shape the story).
Brian Fargo is part of a growing movement of game developers who have realized the potential and importance that crowdfunding can play in the creative process.
“Crowdfunding goes beyond our ability to gauge product interest or for you to get a game at a discounted price, it also is a more open and interactive product development process. We get to know what you want and you don’t get any unpleasant surprises.”
Brian may be the face of inXile Entertainment and Interplay Productions, but it is no doubt his incredible team of artists, designers, and developers that make these homerun successes possible. Brian is bringing back much of the Planescape team to work on Torment: Tides of Numenera including Mark Morgan (music), Adam Heine (scripter), Aaron Meyers (artist) and more who will contribute to the overall setting and theme of the game.
We’re excited to see how well this project does on Kickstarter with 27 days remaining and we’ll keep you posted!
