Crowdfunding 101: The Basics of Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Fundraising

Do you want to raise money on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdfunding websites?

You can now use these online fundraising platforms to get funding for:

  • A creative project, like a film or a book
  • An entrepreneurial venture
  • The mass production of a physical product
  • A nonprofit organization
  • and more!

The first step for unlocking the power of crowdfunding is to gain a quick understanding of the major websites out there, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo.

But, that’s not enough!

You also gotta fully understand WHY crowdfunding works, HOW you’ll receive the funds, and the ways YOU can use it to accelerate your career.

I’m going to share a video with you below that will go into ALL of this.

Since 2012, I’ve been working hard to uncover the best practices for raising money with crowdfunding.

Not only do I write this blog, but I also host a podcast, Crowdfunding Demystified, and regularly publish educational videos on my YouTube channel.

It’s been an incredible journey figuring out all of the different applications of this new financial tool. I’ve gotten to see some of my students raise six and seven figures with crowdfunding.

When going through this Crowdfunding 101 crash course video, I want you to take it seriously, as though I’m speaking to you LIVE right now.

The biggest reason that I see crowdfunders FAIL on Kickstarter and Indiegogo is due to lack of preparation.

They don’t have their ducks in a row when it comes time to launch the campaign.

I don’t blame them, it’s hard!

Crowdfunding Demystified Channel

I want to make it a little bit easier for you. This way, you won’t have to wade through tons and tons of information before going live with your crowdfunding fundraiser.

In addition, you’ll know exactly what to focus on. You’ll know how to spend your budget. You’ll know what techniques work and don’t.

Think of my YouTube channel as a classroom. As you go through it, take notes, comment with questions, and thumbs up the videos that you do like.

If you subscribe and click the “bell” next to the subscription button, you’ll get notifications when I come out with new videos.

Where to Start…

There are lots of places that you can start when it comes to the basics of crowdfunding.

If you’re more of a video learner, you’re going to want to do a deep dive on the YouTube channel. If you like audio, check out the podcast in iTunes. If you’re a reader, go and grab a copy of the Kickstarter Launch Formula on Amazon.

Personally, I usually recommend that students begin with my FREE course on how to smash your goal on Kickstarter. You can access this free course here.

But… let’s say that you want to stick with the YouTube channel.

How can you get up to speed quickly?

I’ll put together a lesson plan for you below:

Wanna hear something crazy?

All of this content barely scrapes the surface.

Comical, right? But it’s true!

I save my best content for my web classes and online courses. You’re seeing the very tip of the iceberg.

To be quite honest, I can give you all of the educational content in the world, but you have to do something with it!

You gotta take action.

Don’t put this off. The second you COMMIT to crowdfunding the right way, you’ll dramatically improve your chances of success.

Doing it the right way encompasses a lot, but in basic terms I’m talking about becoming educated, developing a launch strategy, and setting aside a budget for the launch.

You’ll thank me later.

I’ve had some many crowdfunders approach me after the campaign was finished saying that they WISH they had prepared more.

Don’t take my word for it! Go join KickstarterForum and see for yourself!

I hope that this crowdfunding 101 lesson plan will get you feeling more confident about this whole fundraising business.
