Getting Exposure for GoFundMe Through Facebook
There are a lot of different reasons that you might be running a GoFundMe campaign:
- Charity
- Personal expenses such as medical or education costs
- Travel, funeral, or equipment expenses
- Volunteer programs
Whatever your mission, the question remains:
How are you going to get stranger’s eyeballs on your cause?
This process of getting the word out about your campaign is one of the most difficult parts of the GoFundMe journey. That’s why people are beginning to consider Facebook Advertising — a sure-fire way to drive some traffic.
There are a couple different requirements you will have to meet if you want to run facebook ads:
- You must create a Facebook page for your nonprofit or fundraiser.
- You must decide what type of ad you want to run: whether that be conversion-based, traffic-generating, or engagement-centric. Are you trying to get people to click on the GoFundMe link, join the page, or comment on the post? Make sure you answer that question.
If you do decide to go the Facebook Ad route, I recommend that you start with a boosted post.
Why? Let me lay it out for you.
Let’s say that you have invited your friends, family, and close inner circle to like your fundraising page. Further, let’s say 300 people like that page.
That doesn’t mean that they are all going to see each post. In fact, only a fraction of them will.
A Facebook boosted post blasts the content to all of your followers’ timelines and beyond, ensuring that both the people who follow your page and strangers will encounter your messaging. Without this, you’re not going to see near as many engagements.
Another thing that you can do to increase exposure is uploading a custom audience to your Facebook Ad Manager — which can include an email list or people who have visited a particular website of yours. This will allow you to target your ads to a very specific demographic who is already primed for conversion.
The last strategy I’d recommend is launching an engagement-focused ad that is designed to get lots of social shares, likes, and comments on the post. This is usually done through storytelling or a video, as people are usually more likely to engage with that sort of content.
Should I Use Facebook Ads for GoFundMe?
Aside from the ad strategy recommendations I’ve listed above, I wouldn’t recommend that you use Facebook as a reliable way to actually get donations for a campaign on GoFundMe.
It’s notoriously difficult for a non-profit venture to run a successful advertising campaign. It’s just extremely hard to actually convince a stranger — who has no emotional investment behind your personal goals — to back your project.
From evoking emotional responses to building logical justification in the stranger’s mind, it’s a lot of work. And further, there’s no guarantee of a return on your investment.
But here’s the deal — you can learn how to make ads that convert. Those who put in the time see results, and those who throw money aimlessly don’t. That’s just the harsh reality.
