How to Launch a Viral Crowdfunding Campaign

Do you want to add an element of virality to your crowdfunding campaign?

It’s taken a while, but as an industry, we’ve been able to figure out the compontents behind a viral Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign.

I’ll give you a hint… it all comes down to emotion.

With today’s video, I want to bring that information to you. I want to show you exactly how to engineer a viral campaign that spreads naturally (like a benevolent virus).

By the end of this video, you’ll have a crystal-clear understanding of how to do this.

What did you think of the video?

Do you want more content like this?

All you gotta do is take a second to subscribe to my YouTube channel here, and I’ll send you notifications when I come out with new videos. Usually, that’s about once a week.

Emotion is what causes sharing

All sharing is based in emotion. By sharing a message, photo, or video on Facebook, you are trying to share an emotion that it aroused with your friends. By doing so, when you both feel that same emotion, you bond and deepen the friendship.

Let’s say that a video makes you laugh. You share it with your friend, because it’s funny and you know it will make them laugh. When you both laugh at the same video, you actually bond over the content.

So you should be thinking… what kind of emotions can you trigger in order to get someone to share your campaign with their friends. I answer this in the video.

You should also consider how it is in the first place that a person will feel that emotion which prompts sharing. It almost always can be directly traced back to the crowdfunding pitch video, which not only shows a product, but also illustrates a story of who this product is for and why it needs to exist.

You can be successful without virality

A campaign that is viral is simply passed around social networks like Facebook. You don’t necessarily have to “go viral” in order to be successful on Kickstarter or Indiegogo.

In fact, many of the entrepreneurs and creative types that I’ve brought on my podcast did not have viral campaigns. Instead, they used other ways to get backers to their cause. This means that you can copy their marketing strategies.

All that you have to do is get the word out to enough people that suffer from the problem that your problem or project solves. This is what will allow you to hit, and in time, surpass your fundraising goal. It all comes down to identifying this audience and then getting them to take action.

Virality can actually cause problems

I’m not trying to steer you away from running a viral campaign, but rather some things that you need to be aware of!

Remember, you have obligations once you are successful with a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign. You then have to ship out all your perks and rewards to backers around the world. The more successful you are, the more rewards that you have to ship out.

This massive demand can actually lead to shipping nightmares. Most entrepreneurs don’t plan for a high enough level of demand, leading to delays in reward fulfillment and even issues with their manufacturing partners. You realllllly gotta have your ducks in a row.

Make sure that you put thorough thought into the “systems” that you are going to lean on when delivering your perks to your backers. What would happen to your costs or fulfillment timeline if you overfunded your campaign?

You need a proven path to follow

If you do nothing else, seek out a proven path to follow. There’s tons of content out there on my YouTube channel showing you how to launch a successful campaign. I also have books, like The Kickstarter Launch Formula.

You can always bring me on as a coach or a consultant for your project. You can tap into my last 5+ years of experience having worked with many different entrepreneurs and creative types.

To get started, hop on my weekly crowdfunding tips newsletter and you’ll start getting emails from me every week with some free content. When you’re ready to pull the trigger, just shoot me an email and we can work together.

It’s my aim with my blog, YouTube channel, and podcast to demystify the world of crowdfunding so that you have a clear path to follow when trying to drum up interest and get funding from the crowd.
