How to Start a Nonprofit (and Make Money)

Well, nonprofits don’t exactly make money, because by definition it’s a non-profit.

However, make no mistake, by collection donations cash IS changing hands. The main reason that nonprofits FAIL is because they haven’t mastered how to actually make money.

This is a controversial stance, but stay with me. You see, nonprofits exist for sorely needed reasons. There is a gap in the programs that the government or other organizations are providing and a nonprofit steps in to help with that problem.

Nonprofits can help to solve dire causes that no one else is caring to fix. It’s very noble work, and usually, the people who founded the organization is extremely passionate, compassionate, and driven to help these individuals.

Here’s where the problem sets in.

A nonprofits will only thrive if it can BOTH help a demographic and raise funds to continue its work. That’s why I’ve put together a video for you today on how to actually accomplish this mission. You can watch it below.

I work hard to put together actionable information and education that will help you start and grow your nonprofit organization.

Not all nonprofits SHOULD exist

The function of a nonprofit is to solve a problem that is not being solved by other means. It will only exist if it both accomplishes this mission and raises the funds to do so (on a continual basis).

In other words, sometimes, a nonprofit is not very effective. It doesn’t actually help their target demographic in a tangible way. Other times, a nonprofit is effective, but not enough people care about the “problem.”

There are a limited number of funds in the world and there are only a certain number of people that care about certain causes. If there aren’t enough people who care about the target demographic you’re trying to help, then you’re not going to be able to raise funds on a consistent basis.

Many nonprofits FAIL to make people care.

This is a very common problem. The founder of the nonprofit is super passionate about helping a particular demographic. Maybe they are even able to attract a small team of people that is as passionate as they are.

But – when they try to get other people to care enough to give money, they fail. This is a failure of marketing and persuasion, not the actual direness of the cause. It means that the organization has not effectively aroused emotions in their target donor base.

The more emotions that you arouse in your donors (in other words, make them care), the more likely you are to get people to give money to your fundraiser, cause, or overall organization.

Human beings are emotional creatures. We need to feel empathy and rapport with a group of people before we are willing to help them. The more that we feel like they are similar to us, or a part of our tribe, the more we are willing to extend a helping hand.

You must have a fundraising strategy

Money and donations are not going to just magically pour into your lap. You have to have an actual strategy for warming people up, educating them about your mission, asking for donations. A donation does not happen by accident.

An effective fundraising strategy will encompass a few different elements, including:

  • How people will find you
  • How you’ll educate people about your mission
  • How you’ll get people to care about your target demo
  • How you’ll collect donations and use that social proof to get more from other potential donors

In other videos that I have on my YouTube channel, I go through several ways that you can check many of these items off of your list. If you take nothing else away from this section, just remember that you gotta start to think about developing a fundraising strategy, or you risk leaving things up to chance.

Invest in your education and your network

Aside from having a strong team, the education that you have access to is going to make a major difference in the results that you generate over time. The same goes for the people in your network that you can tap into!

I’ve put together a complete step-by-step guide for you on how to actually go out there and raise funds from the crowd. I cover things like how to build up social media followers, move people to take action, and the major nonprofit crowdfunding websites out there.

In addition to this book, I also offer coaching services for nonprofits. This is the best way to get one-on-one attention and a tailored strategy that you can use to get donations for your nonprofit.
