Let’s get started in talking about how to up-sell your backers.
Increasing Order Value of Pledges
So you have a backer that has pledged money to your campaign in order to receive a specific reward. The question then becomes: How do you increase the overall order value of that pledge?
The tool we are going to use to accomplish this is BackerKit.
After logging into BackerKit, one of my favorite features is the timeline they provide for your campaign. Instead of having to organize multiple spreadsheets and keep track of everything on your own, BackerKit does it for you—which is pretty awesome.
The first step is to send out a survey to get information from your backers. This is where you will have the opportunity to add-on items that your backers can purchase in addition to the rewards they have already been promised.
If you haven’t used add-ons before, I would highly recommend you check out BackerKit’s Best Practices For Survey Add-On Items.
To create a new add-on, click on Customize Add-Ons in the BackerKit dashboard. From there, you can:
- Name the Add-On
- Give a description of the item
- Set an image
- Set a retail price
- Set an offer price (ideally lower than the retail price)
- Highlight the item
- Add SKUs
- Place the item in a category
- Collect shipping addresses
After saving those changes, you will see that your new item has appeared in the list of customizable add-ons.
Remember that these are only up-sell products; not your core reward. So if you already promised a winter jacket as a reward, you wouldn’t need to add it again. Instead, how about a scarf or gloves?
With BackerKit’s powerful functionality, you can also set visibility, create coupon codes, see shipping profiles, and more. Make sure to play around with those features to discover what best meets your project’s needs.
Once your add-ons are all set, you can preview the add-ons page. This will show you what your customers see when they go to checkout, and will appear to your customers right before they go to complete their order. So do your best to catch their attention.
Shipping & Logistics of Up-selling
Additionally, you can edit shipping preferences by clicking the Add Shipping Fees tab. Obviously, shipping is very important, so you will want to make sure these settings are most conducive to a success fulfillment.
In this window, you can edit shipping profiles, shipping regions, and even exclude certain countries if they don’t make logistical sense for your product.
There is also additional Backer Support, where BackerKit will further assist you. In this tab, you can do things like:
- Set estimated shipping dates
- Share updates from Kickstarter
- Update Project FAQs
- Implement Integrations
- Receive advice on backer support
Things can get a little bit more complicated when you get into Pledge Levels. So far, we’ve reviewed just the add-ons, and now we are going to get into the actual review of how much your backers have pledged.
In this window, you can customize the rewards that people are getting based on how much they have pledged. Here you can see how many backers are at each level, add SKUs, ask questions of those who have pledged, and more.
As with all steps in this process, you will want to preview what your survey emails are going to look like. This way, you can be sure that everything is easy to understand on the front end, as you do the more technical work in the back.
When to send out your survey
You may find yourself wondering, when should I send my survey out?
The great thing about BackerKit’s software is it gives you a checklist of tasks that should be completed before sending your survey out to your backers. This can be found in the Request Setup Review tab in the dashboard.
In my opinion, BackerKit is a no-brainer. It’s easy to use, and can save you a ton of time rather than trying to set up add-ons yourself.
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to up-sell after your successful Kickstarter campaign! Capitalize on the momentum of those rewards, and sell, sell, sell!
